THE BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL MONUMENT, in western Colorado. An awesome, sheer-walled chasm cared by the Gunnison River through eons of geologic time two thousand feet down from the bed of an ancient valley. North Rim on left; South Rim, center to right, where the road loop near Painted Wall overlook can be seen.
