But this kind of takes the cake.
It took me about 2 months (it looks like) to get my blog back up after my old server hosting the site crashed. Fortunately, the hard drive was fine, so I was able to recover my data quite easily. All I had to do was
- Tell my ISP that the mac address for my static IP needed to be changed
- Recover the databases off of the hard drive (this was harder than I thought it would be)
- Copy the website data from my old hard drive to the new server
- Update links since I decided to change it to the ‘blog’ subdirectory
Step 1 took about 15 minutes, due to hold times and other fun. You see, since I work for my ISP, they actually pay for my cable modem. So here’s the conversation I have with the tech support rep:
Tech Support: Could I have your name and your phone number please
Me: My name is >name< and my phone number is ...um (mutters to herself, what IS my phone number?! OH!)>phone number<
Tech Support: Ma’am, there isn’t a cable modem on that account.
Me: I know, ISP is paying for it.
Tech Support: … Ma’am, this IS ISP.
Me: (laughs) Oh, I know! I’m an employee; ISP is paying for the cable modem.
Tech Support: …
Anyway, once we got that all straightened out, life was good.
Step 2 was done at least a month ago, and it took me about 3 hours to figure out how it had to be done. It was kind of fun, but I’m weird that way.
Step 3 was just completed about a half an hour ago. It took me an hour or so to get the server config to work out, I had all kinds of fun little issues, but it’s resolved now.
Later on I realized since I had decided to change it so the blog is in a ‘blog’ subdirectory, I had to update all of the links in my existing posts….. I tried a fancy script but ended up just doing a simple substitute in vi after dumping the table contents for the posts. A technical way to say I fixed the links.. quickly, with minimal typing.
So I’m back! Yay!
.. Oh, and also I have email at the new server, finally.. and> and> and>
