Know what Sailor Boy Pilot Bread is?
Have fond memories of it?
It turns out that you can only get Pilot Bread in Alaska anymore, did you know? It sold so poorly in the rest of the US that there was a rumor that the manufacturer was going to quit selling for a while. But it’s not true. Alaskans consume 98% of the Pilot Bread that’s made.
I found this out because my aunt has been visiting from out of state due to a death in the family, and she saw some in the store. She really wants a continuing supply, so we worked out a deal where she will send me Trader Joe’s Earl Grey tea, which is by far some of the best Earl Grey I’ve tried (and I’ve tried a lot), and I’ll send her Pilot Bread.
We started reminiscing about pilot bread - mom likes it fried in butter. Nonny taught me to eat it dipped in tea, then with a sprinkling of sugar. Some like it toasted, with butter. As I remember, it was one of the things that Cheez Whiz was actually good with.
Of course I can’t have it anymore, but it makes me happy to think that I can share it with my aunt – and my cousin, who’s never had it before since she didn’t grow up here.
