Be Wary in Your Predictions

Last year, I predicted we had about 3-5 years before we were in a depression. Not a recession, a depression. I really shouldn’t make predictions, but it’s looking more and more like I was pretty much right. I freely admit that I know nothing about economics, other than it seems to be a complex balance between a shell game and a confidence game. It simply seems to me that we’re teetering on the edge, and it simply can’t be sustained any more.
What’s ironic is that before we had a republican congress and president, our economy was doing pretty good. I don’t know if there’s any past correlation, but it would be interesting to research to see if depression or recessions in the past have been preceded by similar majorities, as if when so many US citizens can agree on the same thing, we’re about to head over the edge. Did we have a recession after we had the Democratic president and congress? I can’t remember that far back.
I’ll consider myself lucky if I make back even half of what I’ve put in my 401K at this point. Not knowing how things will be in the next couple of years, it seems smarter and smarter that I chose to pay off all of my debts in one lump sum. We may have debt relief programs that make such things a moot point, but then again, we may not. It’s nice to know in a little over a year I won’t have to worry about things like that.
